Malware Can Be Popular To Some People
By John F | April 21, 2008
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed.
We’re nearly at the end of April 2008, and some utterly unconnected reason I’d like to highlight how two separate companies who deal with Malware infections, class the top 10 Malware threats for March 2008.
In one corner we have Sophos, who have been around for a while and produce many computer security products. In the other corner we have BitDefender, who I have heard of and their BitDefender program, although I believe them to like the new kids on the block [not the boy band from the 90's]. On a side note their navigation bar on their website is badly designed. Not good website or CSS design at all.
Anyways, Sophos report their top 10 as:
- Troj/Pushdo 51.1%
- W32/Netsky 20.1%
- Mal/Iframe 8.4%
- W32/Mytob 7.4%
- W32/MyDoom 2.6%
- W32/Nyxem 2.1%
- W32/Bagle 1.5%
- W32/Sality 0.8%
- W32/Zafi 0.6%
- W32/Lovgate 0.4%
BitDefender report their top 10 as:
- Trojan.Peed.Gen 55.58
- Win32.Netsky.P@mm 5.97
- BehavesLike:Trojan.ShellHook 2.07%
- Win32.NetSky.D@mm 1.76%
- Win32.Netsky.AA@mm 1.54%
- Win32.Nyxem.E@mm 1.22
- Win32.Netsky.B@mm 1.07
- Win32.Netsky.C@mm 1.03
- Trojan.Kobcka.CZ. 0.83
- Win32.Mydoom.M@mm 0.72%
Now they are not exactly the same and that’s understandable to a point as their products must use different algorithms to search for infections. However, how are their number one threats different? That I don’t understand. If anybody knows please let leave a comment or get in touch.
What the two [different] top 10’s tell us is that there’s a lot of crap out there that’s just waiting to infect our computers and it will just keep increasing and attacking.
