RIP Outlook Express & Hotmail

I have been using Outlook Express since I first used Windows 98. It’s basic, but it works fine for me. I don’t need the full-blown Outlook at home. At work I use it, but that’s because I have no choice in the matter. Although the calendar option is handy to be honest!
I received an email from Microsoft recently informing me that after 30th June 2008 I will not be able to download my Hotmail emails via Outlook Express as the legacy e-mail protocol DAV will no longer be supported. Hotmail will be using the DeltaSync protocol after 30th June 2008, and poor old Outlook Express cannot handle that email protocol.
If I wish to be able to access my Hotmail emails via an email client I will need to download and use Windows Live Mail. Erm, no thanks. I’d rather stick a fork in my eye, repeatedly for a 24 hours than download and use Windows Live Mail. Windows Live Mail at the moment, is pants.
So, what shall I do? I could use the full-blown Outlook [once I download a program to let me access Hotmail], or maybe not. That would remind me too much of work.
I’ve had my Hotmail address since 2003, but it seems Microsoft don’t want people to be able to access Hotmail accounts easily these days. Even downloading Thunderbird won’t let me access my Hotmail emails.
I haven’t quite decided as yet, what I shall do. But it looks increasingly like I will ditch my hotmail address [how much of a pain is it to log on to Hotmail every time to check email?].
I have some Google Mail accounts, so I will edit all my Hotmail email subscriptions and change them to Gmail email addresses. Gmail allows Outlook Express to download and send emails.
Microsoft has just pi55ed off about 4 million users in the world. Well done and thanks Mr. Gates. Change is inevitable, but give us a bit more notice next time, and a better alternative than crappy Windows Live Mail.
