Here’s another handy little tweak that you can action that will speed up your computer. Windows XP keeps a record of all files on your hard disk[s] to try and improve searching speeds. The drawback to this is that your computer will be indexing all of the files. If you don’t use the search facility very much, then you can safely turn this feature off.

1. Open my computer
2. Right click on one of your hard drive icons and then select properties.
3. At the bottom of the window you should see “Allow indexing service to index this disk for faster searches,” uncheck this and click then click on ok.
4. A new window will pop up and select apply to all folders and subfolders.
5. Once complete, it takes a few minutes to ensure that indexing is switched off.
Now your computer will be faster as it will not have to index all your files and folders. Only turn this feature off if you do not frequently search for files.
